Thanksgiving

We have so much to be thankful for this year, and "family" was unanimously at the top our list.
Devon, the kids, and I feel so blessed to have so many people to call family, and as we look back on the past year, we have been able to spend so much time with parents, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, and cousins, and our hearts just could not feel more full!

And in the spirit of having full hearts....
The newlyweds, Aaron and Molly, drove up from Eugene to spend the holiday with us, and we loved having them as house guests.  They jumped right in with the kids- Molly read several books to Max and Lu, and Aaron played video games with Joe.   We might have been waiting by the window when they arrived :)

Here is a peek at how we spent Thanksgiving.

The boys played in a Turkey Bowl, and they had a great time and returned without injuries, but Devon and Joe say that they have never been so sore.  Ever.
While they were gone, Molly and I watched the Thanksgiving Day parade with Max and Lucy, and Molly trimmed Lucy's hair, and colored and trimmed mine.  Gotta love having a sister with hair skills!

Dressed and ready to go to Aunt Merry's and Uncle Dave's!  We picked up Grandma Donna on the way.

Relaxing, watching football.  Aaron bonded with Lola, Merry's sweet black doggy.

Uncle Dave and Max, making some noise.

Devon and his nephew AJ, who celebrates "Movember" with that awesome mustache.

Grandma Donna read some books to Lucy.

Joe and Max played hide-and-seek.  Can you find Max?

Dev and the littles.

Me and a couple of my sisters.  Blondies!

Visiting in Merry's parlor.

Merry and Dave, our hosts who prepared a delicious meal.

Molly and Lucy

Of course, we ate until it hurt.  It was a really great day.
We ended it with some late night/early morning Black Friday shopping!!

We braved the crowds at Target and Best Buy.

How did you spend Thanksgiving?  Did you eat until it hurt?  Did you shop on Black Friday?

Sell. Swap. Donate. Trash

I'm not sure what is going on around here, but I am totally nesting.
Maybe it is the weather.  Maybe it is the season.
I don't know.
What I do know is that a week ago I was picking up toys as I do everyday (and yes, my children should be cleaning up their own toys, and sometimes they do, but, seriously, I do it much better and much faster and with much less whining, plus, I put the Spidermans in the Spiderman bucket and the Cars in the Cars basket and the Barbies in the Barbie basket.... ), and I suddenly realized that we live in excess.  Yes, excess.  There are far too many toys in our house, distributed recklessly across the floor of every room that the kids occupy.
And it isn't just the toys.  No.  Everything from my collection of "paint shirts" (you know, the shirts that I save in case someday I will need to paint something), to our shelf of old shoes in the garage that we save just in case we need to hike through the mud someday, to my four re-usable shopping bags that are full of re-usable shopping bags!  Excess!
So, I've been making piles.  Piles everywhere, everyday.  Sell. Swap. Donate. Trash.  The piles grow, and nothing is safe, except...  except!...  the baby stuff.  I come across our baby blankets, or our crib bedding, or my maternity clothes that I've kept just in case....  Just in case we ever have another baby, I should keep our baby stuff.
Now, don't panic, or don't get excited, whichever side of that coin that you may fall on; We are not having another baby.  But we are also not not having another baby.  We have no plans of adding to our family, but it also isn't a closed door.  And, can I be honest? I do want to have another baby.  But probably not right now.  Though we aren't getting any younger (and one of us especially isn't getting younger, ahem, Devon).
But, anyway, back to my story- I am trying to purge our home of excess.  I am trying to pretend that we are going to move across the globe and we can only take the stuff that we really, really, really want and need.
So, from room to room, and even through the garage, I'm looking for crap to toss. And while in the garage, I unburied our crib, and I was back to that big looming question mark that hangs over my head.  Another baby?
I happen to be in love with our crib.  I found it on Craigslist when I was pregnant with Lucy, and then I had a dream about it, so the next morning Joe and I drove to a stranger's house to buy it, and I've loved it ever since.  Nevermind the fact that it was rarely slept in...
Do you have any special furniture that you want to keep forever and ever?  Hopefully your special piece isn't a crib because what the heck and I going to do with this thing?  Do you know that you can't even resell cribs anymore?  It is against the law, I think.
So, I stood in the garage and stared at the crib for a while.  And then, like a strike of brilliance, I had an idea:  I'll assemble it and put it in our bedroom!
"What?"  That is what you are thinking, right?
Let me explain- Max and Lucy both make their way from their beds to our bed every single night because I was a failure at teaching a baby how to sleep through the night alone, hence the barely used crib. So, Max sleeps beside me, and Lucy sleeps beside him, and Devon sleeps beside Lucy.  But Lucy has recently been kicked out of the "family bed" because Devon just doesn't care to have her knees digging into his back all night.  So Lucy has been sleeping on the crib mattress on the floor in our bedroom, like this...

But now, behold!

I was hoping that it would look like a mini daybed.  Nope, it looks like a crib.

Oh well.

The kids haven't seemed to notice the various items that are suddenly missing, which is a good sign that they can live with less.  And I haven't yet started on Joe's room or Devon's stuff.  Wish me luck!

Fall and All

Wow- it has been two whole weeks since I last posted.  Is anyone still out there?
I guess that not much is happening around here.  Not much worth writing about, maybe.  We are cozied into our fall routine, staying warm and dry inside, settling down the house a bit earlier each night since it is dark by 5pm...  I like fall.  I do.
I don't even have many pictures to share.  But here is what I've got-

Max and Greyson enjoy a movie- a funny one, evidently.

Score! A $3 Ironman costume at Target's post-Halloween sale!

Lucy's ballet dress rehearsal for the holiday show.  Her dance number is Spanish Chocolate, from The Nutcracker.

Dut-dut-du-du-du-du afro circus.

And finally, an over-night visit with Andrea.  We met up in Portland and it was so great to see her!  With some friends, not much catching up is required because we pick up right where we left off :)  I love this girl!!

And this is a little jewel that caught my eye on Pinterest.  The current season of my life?  It is messy.  Sometimes sticky. Lots of laundry.  Lots of teenage attitude.  An increasing amount of 5 year old attitude. Runny noses. Soup for dinner.  Looking forward to Tuesdays and Wednesdays (Devon's days off).  Anticipating the holidays. Snuggling under blankets with cups of hot tea.  Rainboots. Watching Brothers & Sisters on Netflix (I love this show!!).  Spiderman. Merida. XBox. Football. Finding new grey hairs and new wrinkles. This is the current season, and I am embracing it. :)

(it was a) Happy Halloween!

Another Halloween is done and in the books!

I think I've said this before- I love being a mom at the end of October.
I mean, of course, I love being a mom year-round, but there is just something extra heart-warming about seeing my kids in costumes, with big smiles on their faces, knocking on strangers' doors, saying "twick or tweat!", bringing home an assortment of candy...
Ah, yes.  Such a joy, those little candy-fetchers.

This year, Lucy chose to be Merida, the heroine of Disney's Brave.  The wig kills me!

Max chose to be black Spiderman, as opposed to red and blue Spiderman, which was so last year.  Yes, the muscles are amazing.

And Joe...  well...  much to his disappointment, Devon and I made the decision that Joe would stay home and hand out candy to the trick-or-treaters rather than go out with friends.  He is getting big, you know.  Like, too big to trick-or-treat, we think.  But he did dress up for school.  He was a nerd. :)

Our first Halloween event was Eastridge Church's Fall Festival.  Our party of five went, and we had a lot of fun playing games and checking out all of the other fun costumes.

our friends, Caleb and Aliya

On a different day, the little ones and I went to a birthday party at a local barn/pumpkin patch.  The barn was just perfect for housing all of the costumed kiddos and games and treats...

And then everyone headed out to the pumpkin patch to run around.

I thought it would make a nice photo- Max sitting on a pumpkin.
He disagreed.
And it looks like he is sitting on a toilet.

Finally, it was Halloween.
And just in case you haven't seen enough of that big red wig...

Little Molly joined us (and her parents too)

Devon and Grandma Donna

we gave Joe some business

The challenge of the night was teaching Max to graciously accept candy rather than be selective and express his opinions.
We heard a lot of,
"Not chocolate again!"
"I don't like chocolate!"
Yes.  He was that kid.

The spookiest part of the night?  We realized that Joe has finally grown taller than me. Scary!!
